Dimension Data sells fibre, wireless assets

Dimension Data is offloading its wireless and fibre businesses to black-owned ICT company Vulatel for an undisclosed sum.

This is after management determined that the two businesses are “not core to its value proposition”.

“Our goal is growing and strengthening our existing core business, and accelerating into newer areas including data analytics, the Internet of things, hybrid IT, the digital workplace and cybersecurity,” a Dimension Data spokeswoman said on Monday.

The Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure business was merged into Plessey South Africa in October 2014. In June 2016, Plessey South Africa was renamed as Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure.

Plessey is a big player in the fibre and wireless markets. It has built long-haul, metro and access networks across South Africa. The wireless business delivers microwave backbone deployments as well as point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and Wi-Fi installations.

About 150 employees will be moved across to Vulatel as part of the deal, which is still subject to various approvals. The transaction is expected to close by 1 October. — (c) 2017 NewsCentral Media
