McLeod, Dingle named ICT journalists of the year

Simon Dingle and Duncan McLeod

TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod and Finweek technology correspondent Simon Dingle have been named joint ICT journalists of the year at the inaugural Telkom Classic Business Journalist of the Year Awards.

The awards, the ceremony for which was held at Summer Place in Sandton on Thursday, was organised to recognise excellence in business journalism.

The ceremony was officiated by higher education minister Blade Nzimande, with Classic Business host John Fraser and Telkom chief financial officer Peter Nelson.

The ICT category was one of five main categories in the awards.

McLeod left Financial Mail in September 2009 to found TechCentral, now SA’s fastest-growing business technology news website. He continues to write a column on technology issues for the FM.

Dingle is technology correspondent at Finweek and and also hosts the weekly ZA Tech Show netcast. McLeod is a regular panellist on the ZA Tech Show.

The overall Telkom Classic Business Journalist of the Year award went to former FM journalist Rob Rose, who recently joined the Sunday Times as an investigative reporter.  — Staff reporter, TechCentral

Sorry, but how can we assume you, as “journalists”, to be impartial when you’re being wined, dinned and showered with awards by the very companies you’re supposed to be reporting on?

Would you take Ryan Block’s opinion of Apple seriously if he was Apple’s “ICT journalist” of the year?

Call me stupid, but surely this is Journalism 101?

  2. @Gary: I understand your concern, and it would be an issue if Telkom or whoever was actually sponsoring it had any say in who the winners were. But they didn’t. This was an independent and credible journalism competition, judged by our peers. Telkom played no part whatsoever in the judging. I grant you it’s a thin line, but the line was certainly not crossed.

Well done chaps! I hope the champers flowed at the Zatechshow recording tonight

  4. A fantastic award that is well deserved for two guys who truly take the time to understand the technology space to write what’s important, rather than just what is popular!

    Well done!

  5. I read this headine as “McLeod’s Dingle named ICT journalist of the year”.

  6. Well done chaps….but where will you hang those framed trophies? Surely not in the guest toilet. The winners were all rather pale weren’t they? But I can say that as one of SA’s best loved racists can’t I?

  7. @David Bullard: Yes, the winners were mostly white. Let’s hope that changes next year.

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to say howzit at the lunch…

Congratulations gentlemen: compelling reading in Silicon Valley on all things ICT Africa.
