MTN’s Nhleko joins BP board

Phuthuma Nhleko

Outgoing MTN Group CEO Phuthuma Nhleko has been appointed to the board of British energy giant BP. The appointment is effective 1 February.

Nhleko is stepping down as CEO of MTN at the end of March, but is being appointed as the emerging market telecommunications group’s nonexecutive deputy chairman as well as nonexecutive chairman of MTN International.

In a statement, BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg says Nhleko is an “international business leader of high standing with a wide-ranging business experience in emerging markets”. Svanberg is a former CEO of Sweden’s Ericsson, a key equipment supplier to MTN.

Svanberg says Nhleko’s appointment “reflects the growing importance of emerging markets [to BP]and their growing integration into the global economy”.

Nhleko is also nonexecutive chairman of Worldwide Investment Holdings, which he cofounded. Worldwide has investments in the petroleum, telecoms and IT industries.  — Staff reporter, TechCentral
