TalkCentral: Episode 27 – ‘Mine’s bigger than yours’

It’s the weekend and that means it’s time for another episode of TalkCentral, the business technology podcast from the editors at TechCentral. This week, your hosts Candice Jones and Duncan McLeod talk about what’s happening on top of the Ponte tower in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

We also look at the iPad 2 launch — will you buy one? — and examine this week’s cuts in wholesale call termination rates and ask why retail call prices aren’t coming down (Neotel excepted). Also on the agenda this week: Mustek’s Windows 7 slate, Internet Solutions’ infrastructure plans, the looming announcement of Telkom’s new CEO, plus news of the upcoming inaugural TechCentral Pub Quiz. If you live in Johannesburg, you’re not going to want to miss it.

This week’s show is available in audio. Sorry, there’s no video version this week.

  1. re: Xoom – There is a 32gig wifi only version of the Xoom which is $599 (same price as iPad 32gig), and has been spotted for $539 in retail locations in USA. It’s a good price because it’s better specced – better CPU/GPU, higher res screen, GPS (wifi only iPad has no GPS), BAROMETER(!!!!), and the battery life is close enough not to matter (about an hour less than iPad).

The $799 3G/4G Xoom is $70 more than the equivalent 3G iPad, but again, it’s better specced. That’s really close enough not to matter, and it really comes down to OS preference over price.

It’s nice to see someone beating Apple in price with comparable quality hardware, after all the “we control the entire chain” hoopla. There’s hope for a price war yet!
