Uber has established a presence in Mombasa in Kenya and Abuja in Nigeria, with the two cities becoming the 399th and 400th cities in which the Internet ride-hailing service has been launched.

Uber, which is already available in a number of South African cities — Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth — provides travellers with the ability to flag a driver and pay for a ride through its smartphone application.

In a statement, Uber GM for sub-Saharan Africa Alon Lits described Mombasa and Abuja as “progressive, forward-thinking cities that have a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be venturing further into Africa”.

“By offering a safe and reliable complement to existing transport options, we can help improve urban mobility across African cities, helping reduce traffic congestion and the environmental impact of vehicles at the same time,” Lits said in the statement.

  • An earlier version of this article said that Mombasa and Abuja were the first African cities outside South Africa where Uber has been launched, which was not correct
