Vumatel goes live with 200Mbit/s fibre

Fibre-to-the-home operator Vumatel has officially launched 200Mbit/s fibre options on its network, it said on Wednesday. The products are available in both symmetrical and asymmetrical versions.

TechCentral reported last month that Vumatel would bring the speedier connections to market on 1 August.

“Vumatel has launched 200/20Mbit/s and 200/200Mbit/s speeds on its network in response to growing demands for higher speeds,” CEO Niel Schoeman said in a statement. The company is one of the first fibre providers – and certainly the largest – to offer 200Mbit/s as an option to home users.

Several Internet service providers have already started offering 200Mbit/s plans on the back of the launch. They include Axxess, Afrihost, iConnect Telecoms, Crystal Web and Webafrica, with uncapped pricing starting at R1 299/month.

“We have launched new 200Mbit/s products in collaboration with our Internet service providers in an effort to provide the market with more options,” Schoeman said.

Operators such as Vumatel, Metrofibre Networx, Openserve (Telkom), MTN and Vodacom are racing each other to build home fibre broadband infrastructure in South Africa.  — © 2017 NewsCentral Media
