For two decades, GovTech has been the room where South Africa’s digital government story gets written. This year, that story reaches a milestone worth pausing on.

GovTech 2026 runs from 21 to 23 September in Durban, marking the platform’s 20th anniversary. Organised by the State Information Technology Agency, it remains the country’s largest gathering of public sector technology leaders, built this year around a single theme: South Africa as architect of its own digital destiny.

Twenty years is a genuine milestone in any industry gathering. In South African government technology, where platforms come and go, it is a track record.

Sita managing director Magatho Mello, introducing this year’s conference, said the momentum building across government and industry marks a defining moment, one that calls for deliberate action on where the sector goes next.

That sense of momentum shapes the whole 2026 programme.

The organisers have structured this year’s edition around four permanent anchors: citizen-facing AI, robotics and automation; cybersecurity and trust; data governance and interoperability; and aligned infrastructure and connectivity. Every session, demonstration and partnership at the conference is built to connect back to one of those four, and from there to a real citizen outcome.

New this year is the GovTech Progress Tracker, a mechanism that will monitor delivery across sovereign cloud adoption, AI governance, interoperability, cybersecurity maturity, connectivity expansion and digital public service delivery. It is a confident move for a platform entering its third decade.

Confident, because it gives the conversation a clear scoreboard to point to as the years ahead unfold.

Four groups

GovTech 2026 is structured around four groups it wants in the room, not just on the guest list. Government departments, regulators and public institutions are recognised as the principal architects of policy implementation, digital identity and shared infrastructure. Technology providers are invited in as genuine capability partners, contributing to localisation, skills transfer and open interoperability standards.

Universities, research councils and TVET institutions bring the skills pipeline the sector has been building towards. SMMEs and start-ups get direct access to government problem statements through the GovTech Challenge, a route into public sector opportunity that most events never offer.

That is a wider net than most South African tech events cast, and it is also who stands to gain most from being there. Anyone shaping departmental digital strategy, selling into government, researching public sector innovation, or looking to get a young company in front of the people writing the problem statements has a specific reason to be in Durban this September.

For businesses weighing up the cost of a delegate pass, the case is a practical one. Three days in Durban put a team in the same room as the government departments, regulators and public institutions setting next year’s technology priorities, before those priorities turn into tenders and requests for proposals. It is also one of the few places to benchmark against peers and competitors under a single roof, rather than piecing that picture together meeting by meeting over the course of a year.

There are diverse and weighty topics from speakers confirmed across the three days, alongside the Public Service ICT Awards Gala Dinner and a full exhibition floor of industry partners and sponsors.

The three days move fast. Between keynote sessions, live demonstrations and structured networking, delegates get more than a seat in the audience. They get direct access to the people shaping South Africa’s digital government agenda, and the room to have the kind of conversation that actually moves it forward.
