As businesses grow and transact more digitally, the opportunities increase, but so do the risks. Fraudsters are using sophisticated tactics, making digital banking security essential to protecting cash flow, reputation and growth. The Standard Bank Business Digital Security Centre helps businesses understand these threats and strengthen their defences.
Many scams rely on social engineering rather than technical hacking. Phishing emails and SMSs, vishing (voice phishing) calls and one-time Pin (OTP) scams may impersonate a trusted organisation, create urgency or direct you to a link asking for an OTP, password or Pin. Fake invoice and payment scams may use altered invoices or fraudulent requests to change supplier banking details, while transaction fraud can exploit compromised credentials to authorise payments. Remote-access scams can also give criminals control of a device and expose digital banking information.
The strongest defence starts with simple, consistent security habits:
- Never share your OTP, Pin or password. Standard Bank will never ask you to disclose these details over the phone, by email or through a link.
- Verify payment changes independently. If a supplier advises you that their banking details have changed, contact them using a trusted number you already know before making payment.
- Pause, disconnect and verify. If you receive unexpected communication claiming to be from Standard Bank or a trusted supplier, especially if you are pressured to act urgently, end the interaction and verify it independently using contact details you know and trust.
- Protect your devices. Never download third-party applications or give someone remote access to your computer or mobile device during an unsolicited or unverified support call.
Fraud prevention is everyone’s responsibility, particularly that of employees involved in payments, supplier management and online banking.
The Standard Bank Business Digital Security Centre gives businesses access to security guides, educational resources, fraud-prevention checklists, scam information and support to help strengthen their defences.
Because protecting the people, systems and payments that keep your business moving is part of Where Real Growth Begins.
