Connected South Africans are more likely to have checked into Facebook in the past week than watched television, according to a new study.

Cape Town-based media agency Limelight Consulting has published some preliminary results of a survey of thousands of South African consumers. The full report will be published later this year.

The agency’s Media Usage Report shows that 72% of digitally connected adult South Africans use Facebook daily, while more people use Facebook in a seven-day period than watch TV.

Young adults, aged between 18 to 24, are 8% less likely to use Facebook than those senior in age to them, but more likely to engage on all other social media platforms. Some 85% of connected women surveyed make use of Facebook daily, compared to 62% men.

Other survey results show that 72% of women have never used Snapchat, while only 37% of men claimed the same. Unsurprisingly, Snapchat is much more popular among youngsters.

“Parents, if you want to know what your kids are doing, learn to use Snapchat — the high percentage of daily and weekly users suggest that it’s here to stay and increasing in popularity,” said Lighthouse Consulting MD Ross Sergeant in a statement.
