Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig is making a strong recovery after suffering a stroke, the mobile operator’s acting CEO, Jose Dos Santos, said on Thursday.

Last Monday, Knott-Craig suffered what Cell C is describing as a “minor stroke”. He has suffered a number of health problems over the years, including having two heart attacks while CEO of Vodacom.

Dos Santos said Knott-Craig’s progress has been “phenomenal”.

“He’s up and takes his daily walks,” Dos Santos said. “There’s been very good progress from his perspective. He’ll be back sooner than most people anticipate.”

Cell C’s shareholders met on Monday and have been “very supportive” of the management team, he added. “For us, it’s business as usual. They’re giving him the time to rest and recover and they’ll make the appropriate announcements when they’re ready.”

Dos Santos, who has worked with Knott-Craig for years, including at Vodacom, said he expects Knott-Craig will return to work. “Alan is a fighter. Whether he wants to come back in the same capacity or not, that’s for him to decide. I’m convinced he will come back, knowing Alan as I know him.”  — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
