Apple has announced it will officially enter the Nigerian market and has appointed four authorised resellers in the West African country. These are iConnect and Orchard in Lagos, and Meed Networks and Cross-Energy Supply in Abuja. To date, Apple products have been sold in the region through unofficial dealers, even though the country’s operators have offered products like the iPad on contract offers. Duty cuts on Kenyan software delayed
Consumers will have to wait longer than expected to benefit from the recent removal of the 5% import duties levied on software announced by the Kenyan government. Finance minister Njeru Githae announced the cut in this year’s budget speech. Government has yet to confirm when the price cut will come into effect. Major market players like Microsoft have welcomed the move and expressed their hope that the cuts will come into effect sooner rather than later. Airtel Tanzania takes on M-Pesa
Tanzanian mobile operator Airtel has taken on Vodacom’s M-Pesa service by offering its subscribers a cash transfer service that allows them to send or receive money free of charge. The service works using unstructured supplementary service data, meaning it can be used on any handset and forms part of the company’s existing Airtel Money service which already allows consumers to pay utility bills, and purchase goods and services.
