    Firefox now available for iOS

Independent Web browser, the open-source Firefox from Mozilla, is now available for Apple mobile devices, including the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod touch. Previously, the browser was available only on PCs and Macs and, since 2011, on Android-based smartphones and tablets.

The worldwide release of Firefox for iOS comes after several months of beta testing involving users in New Zealand.

Like the Android and desktop versions of the browser, full, cross-platform syncing of bookmarks, browser history and other data is supported. There’s also a private browsing mode, which allows users to browse the Web without their history being saved.

Mozilla had resisted building a browser for iOS in the past because the non-profit company did not look favourably on restrictions Apple puts on third-party developers. It changed its mind after claiming it “saw an opportunity with the latest improvements and tools in iOS 8”.

Firefox developers have been testing the iOS version among users in New Zealand since 5 September.

Meanwhile AndroidCentral is reporting that Android users can now preview Mozilla’s Firefox OS operating system for smartphones on their Android devices, without having to remove Android. The software is offered in the form of an experimental app that replaces elements of the Android homescreen.

Those that like it have the option of flashing Firefox OS onto their devices.  — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
