It’s a deal that’s been a long time coming. After many months of careful planning and negotiation, Cell C will sell 3 200 of its cellular base stations to US-based American Tower Corp (ATC) for US$430m (R2,9bn). The company will use the money to restructure its balance sheet.

UK-based tower infrastructure company Eaton Telecom has signed its first deal with Vodafone Ghana. The 10-year contract will see Eaton take over the operations and co-location management of 750 of Vodafone Ghana’s base-stations.

Cell C’s plan to sell its network of base stations should be concluded within the next four weeks, says CEO Lars Reichelt. In March, TechCentral broke the news that SA’s smallest mobile operator was considering selling parts of its base station network, and then leasing that infrastructure back from the winning bidder.

UK-based tower infrastructure company Eaton Telecom has opened an office in Tanzania. Eaton, founded by three top-level telecommunications industry executives, has had its sights set on the booming African mobile market for some time. The company builds, buys and manages base stations on behalf of cellular operators, a business that is starting to gain traction with African operators.
