Vox to shut own data centre in move to Teraco

ICT provider Vox said on Wednesday that it will shut its Waverley, Johannesburg data centre in favour of an outsourced arrangement with Teraco.

Vox said it will use Teraco’s new Riverfields “hyperscale” data centre in Bredell on Johannesburg’s East Rand and will close the Waverley facility by November.

“Migration of co-location customers from our Waverley data centre to Riverfields is progressing well,” said Keith Laaks, executive head of core networks at Vox. “We are shutting down the Vox-operated Waverley data centre in November, having opted to outsource a non-core activity, such as data centre facilities management, to a competent provider.”

Laaks said the company is “very happy” with the Riverfields design, level of fault tolerance, maintainability and operations “in line with global industry best practices”.

The data centre in Bredell is the fourth carrier-, cloud- and vendor-neutral facility to be built by Teraco. In addition to Isando and Riverfields, Vox also uses Teraco’s Durban and Cape Town data centres.

“Provisioning of our routing, switching, compute, storage and associated redundant fibre infrastructure has been completed with our co-location and cloud services now in full production. The Riverfields facility forms part of the Vox strategy for geo-redundant services for carrier, voice and cloud customers,” Laaks said.

He added that Vox has a long-term relationship with Teraco and its peering business NAPAfrica. “The new data centre offers close proximity to Teraco’s existing Isando facility, ensures minimal latency (network round-trip times) and the ability to deliver high-performance data replication essential for geo-redundant storage products.” – © 2018 NewsCentral Media
