Promoted | A guide on what to compare before choosing a .co.za registrar, from renewals to security.

How to choose a .co.za domain without paying more later

More than just the address people type to find your business, a .co.za domain is a long-term asset that needs to stay under your control, be renewed on time and connect cleanly to your website, e-mail or e-commerce platform.

That is why the first-year price is only one part of the decision. The renewal price is what you pay every year after registration, so it shows the real long-term cost.

At Domains.co.za, the current listed .co.za price is R99 to register, R119 to renew and R0* to transfer in, including VAT. To compare any registrar, use the same formula: first-year price + renewal price × (years − 1). This helps you see the long-term cost before you commit.

A reseller can sell domains through a registrar, but that adds another layer between you and the registry

Every .co.za domain name extension sits in the same registry. The .ZA Domain Name Authority (Zadna) regulates the .za namespace, while the ZA Registry Consortium (Zarc) operates the .co.za registry. So the domain itself is no different from one registrar to another, or even from a domain reseller. What changes is the service around it: renewal pricing, account tools, DNS management, security options, support and transfer handling.

Ownership matters as much as price. The registrant is the legal holder of the domain. If your developer, designer or agency registers the domain in their own name, they may control renewals, DNS changes, transfers and account access. Always register the domain in your name or your business’s name, then check the record with a Whois lookup.

Before buying, compare the renewal price, transfer-in cost, DNS tools, security options, refund rules, support channels and whether the provider is an accredited registrar or a reseller. A reseller can sell domains through a registrar, but that adds another layer between you and the registry.

    Hosting

You do not always need hosting with your .co.za. If your site runs on Shopify, Wix, Webflow, WordPress or a similar platform, you can register the domain only and then point the DNS records to that platform. If you want everything managed together, Domains.co.za offers web hosting with a free .co.za domain registration* at purchase on qualifying plans.

Renewals also need attention. Domains.co.za sends reminders before expiry, and auto-renewal can help reduce missed renewals. If a domain is not renewed, it can move through expiry and redemption to eventual deletion:

    • Renewal e-mails are sent 90, 60, 30, 14 and seven days before the expiry date, and again one day before.
    • For domains on auto-renewal, Domains.co.za sends invoices 30 days before expiry.
    • There is a grace period of 10 days after expiry in which to renew an expired domain.
    • The domain then enters a redemption period of 20 to 30 days.
    • After that, it is deleted and released for public registration.

Security matters too. Domains.co.za includes one-click DNSSEC, which protects a domain’s DNS records from tampering, with eligible registrations. Its Domain Protection service adds safeguards such as two-factor authentication (2FA) on updates, transfer lock, Anycast DNS, protection against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and a discount of up to 50% on redemption.

A good .co.za decision comes down to long-term cost, clear ownership, renewal control and the services that help protect the domain.

With Domains.co.za, you can search for a .co.za, transfer an existing domain or bundle your domain with web hosting when you are ready to launch.
