Lycamobile, one of the world’s largest mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), has firmed up its plans to launch services in South Africa, piggybacking on Cell C’s network.
TechCentral first reported in March that Lycamobile would launch in South Africa, after Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos revealed that the UK-headquartered company would launch an MVNO in the local market.
The South African launch expands Lycamobile’s global footprint to 23 countries and marks the company’s first launch in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Following this launch, South Africans will have the opportunity to connect with friends and family through Lycamobile’s low-cost calling, texting and data services,” Cell C said in a statement on Friday.
“As one of the most influential and technologically advanced countries in the region, South Africa is a natural choice for Lycamobile, as we continue to expand further into the thriving African telecommunications space,” said Lyca Group chairman Allirajah Subaskaran in the statement.
Lycamobile, which was founded in 2006, has 15m customers worldwide. It has identified markets in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America for expansion.
The company now operates in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, the UK, Ukraine and the US. — (c) 2017 NewsCentral Media
