New M&A head at Competition Commission

The Competition Commission has appointed Tamara Paremoer as the new divisional manager of mergers and acquisitions with immediate effect.

Paremoer, who holds a MCom (economics) from Wits University, was appointed acting divisional manager of M&A in July following a stint as case adviser to the commissioner, Tembinkosi Bonakele, providing advice on economic and strategic matters.

Previously, she held several senior positions at the commission including being the inaugural director of the health market inquiry, principal policy analyst and head of international relations.

Paremoer has also worked as an investigator on several key abuse of dominance and cartel cases, including the supermarkets investigation, as well as the dairy, fishing, bread and milling cartels, the commission said.

“She has also worked as an economist in the office of the president’s special economic adviser, Trudi Makhaya. Paremoer also worked as a senior economist at the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development based at the University of Johannesburg where she provided training and research support on competition economics to competition authorities in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.”

Her research focused on competition, concentration and inclusion in the South African economy, local economic development and assessing how regional value chains can support industrialisation in Southern Africa. She has also worked in leading management consultancies and in the FMCG sector, the commission said.  — (c) 2019 NewsCentral Media
