The former chairman of communications regulator Icasa, Paris Mashile, has been reappointed to the authority’s decision-making council with immediate effect.
News of Mashile’s return to Icasa comes as the authority names four new councillors. Other than Mashile, the new councillors are Botlenyana Mokhele, Peter Zimri and Keabetswe Modimoeng.
“The appointment of new councillors comes after a rigorous [selection] process by the portfolio committee on communications, which began in February 2014,” Icasa said in a statement.
The four new councillors were sworn in on Thursday at Icasa’s offices in Sandton.
Following the appointments, Icasa now has seven councillors. It still has two vacancies, which have now been advertised by the portfolio committee.
For much of the past year, Icasa has functioned with only three councillors, raising questions about the ability of the agency to function.
Icasa spokesman Paseka Maleka told TechCentral last year that although the authority had only three councillors, the Icasa Act, as amended, “provides for continued and legitimate decision making by the council, even in instances where there are fewer councillors in office at any given time”. — (c) 2016 NewsCentral Media
