Alpheus Mangale, the Seacom CEO who has been placed on special leave pending an independent investigation, has resigned from the board of Absa Group with immediate effect.
In an investor statement late on Thursday, Absa said Mangale had resigned as an independent non-executive director, effective 8 October, “due to personal reasons and future commitments”.
He will also step down from the three board committees on which he served: the group risk and capital management committee, the remuneration committee and the IT committee.
“The board thanks Mr Mangale for his contribution to the Absa Group board since joining in July 2023 and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the bank said.
The announcement came a day after TechCentral first reported that Seacom’s board had placed Mangale on special leave and appointed an independent third party to investigate allegations it had received about how the company was being run.
Seacom chairman Pieter Uys told TechCentral on Wednesday that the step was “just a precaution” and that “there’s nothing that says he’s guilty of anything”. The board has asked the investigator to report back within about a month. Chief financial officer Charl Slabbert is standing in as interim CEO.
Career history
Absa did not link Mangale’s resignation to developments at Seacom.
Mangale joined Absa’s board in July 2023, months after becoming Seacom CEO in April that year. He was previously an executive at Standard Bank, Absa’s rival, where he was group CIO and later head of IT engineering, and spent more than 15 years at Dimension Data. — (c) 2026 NewsCentral Media
