Afrihost said on Tuesday that it is entering the fibre-to-the-home market using the infrastructure deployed by Vumatel, Telkom’s Openserve and TT Connect, a fibre provider on Johannesburg’s East Rand.

Now, the company has lifted the lid on its FTTH plans and prices, with all packages offering uncapped Internet access.

Pricing starts at R499/month for a “home” uncapped offering at speeds of up to 4Mbit/s down and 1Mbit/s up on Vumatel’s network and 5Mbit/s down and 5Mbit/s up on TT Connect’s infrastructure. The entry-level plan on Openserve is R599/month for 4Mbit/s down and 2Mbit/s up.

Afrihost is best known for its aggressively priced digital subscriber line and mobile data products, and is belatedly entering the already quite crowded FTTH space.

Similar to Afrihost’s DSL packages, each fibre package will have a “home”, “business” and “premium” option. “Home” is geared towards the Web surfer, “premium” to the gamer and media addict, and “business” to heavy and business users, it said.

All Afrihost fibre packages are bundled, so there are no additional charges like there are on DSL.

A R50Mbit/s down and 5Mbit/s up “home” uncapped bundle on Vumatel costs R999/month on Afrihost, while a 40Mbit/s down and 20Mbit/s up plan on Openserve fetches R1 499/month. (See more pricing here.)

At the very top end, a 1Gbit/s down and 100Mbit/s up “business” connection on Vumatel costs an eye-watering R49 999/month.  — (c) 2016 NewsCentral Media
