Hello, Moto! The Motorola smartphone brand has made a return to South Africa with the launch by Lenovo of the Moto Z in South Africa in Midrand in Johannesburg on Thursday evening.
The new device looks set to stand out from a crowded smartphone market with a modular design that allows users to “snap” on “Moto Mods” that add functionality to the phone.
The Moto Mods family includes JBL SoundBoost speakers (with integrated battery), Insta-Share Projector (also with integrated battery), power packs from Incipio, and the Hasselblad True Zoom, which adds 10x optical zoom to the built-in camera. A range of back covers can also be added.
The phone, which is 5,2mm thick (without the added Moto Mods), has a quad-HD Amoled dislay, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. It supports microSD cards up to 2TB in size.
Other features include a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus and a front-facing 5MP camera that has a wide-angle lens and flash.
The phone is not waterproof, but comes with a water-repellent coating, which “shields the phone from rain, splashes or spills”, Lenovo said.
The Moto Z will go on sale in South Africa starting on 1 November in black and “lunar grey”.
