Standard Bank will undertake IT maintenance this Sunday morning, meaning its online and cellphone banking facilities could be offline. The maintenance could also affect its smartphone banking application.

“The planned downtime on Sunday is to do routine maintenance of our internal systems,” says spokesman Sihle Bolani.

Earlier this month, Standard Bank experienced technical glitches that affected clients who complained about not being able to withdraw money from ATMs. Others said their cards were being declined at the point of sale. Internet and cellphone banking applications were also down.

Bolani says Sunday’s planned downtime is because of routine maintenance and isn’t related to the earlier issues.

Standard Bank says clients will still be able to make cash withdrawals and deposits at ATMs, and will be able to use their debit, cheque and credit cards to make payments on Sunday. However, the banking app and Internet and cellphone banking facilities will be available only intermittently.

Bolani says all issues that caused the glitches in recent weeks have been resolved. “It is always an ongoing process to ensure our systems are running smoothly.”

“We understand the frustration and impact to customers that the disruption may have and apologise in advance for any inconvenience,” says the bank’s chief executive for personal and business banking, Funeka Montjane. “In order to ensure that the impact is minimal, we urge customers to please plan ahead in terms of their banking requirements.”  — (c) 2014 NewsCentral Media
