PlayStation 4 sales pass 90 million mark

Sony has now sold more than 91.6 million PlayStation 4 consoles, helped by a sales boost in the run-up to Christmas.

The Japanese firm managed to sell a total of 5.6 million units during the 2018 festive season, while more than 50.7 million PS4 games were sold over the same period, taking the total number of game sales to 876 million globally since its last console launch in November 2013.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, which became the fastest-selling PlayStation first-party game ever, had sold more than nine million copies as of 25 November.

Last year, Sony revealed that it will not attend annual videogames convention, E3, in 2019 for the first time in the show’s 24-year history

“This year we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated line-up of games that are only possible on PS4,” said John Kodera, president and chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, Sony Interactive Entertainment will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

The company also said that PlayStation Network, the console’s online platform, continues to grow, surpassing 90 million monthly active users on the service as at the end of November 2018.

Last year, Sony revealed that it will not attend annual videogames convention, E3, in 2019 for the first time in the show’s 24-year history.

E3 is one of the biggest dates in the videogame industry calendar and is traditionally the venue used to announce new gaming content and console hardware for the likes of Xbox and Nintendo, as well as Sony’s PlayStation.
