    Telkom upgrades DSL users

Telkom is again upping speeds for broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) users and, in some cases, is also adjusting its prices.

The move comes just a day after group CEO Sipho Maseko told TechCentral that speeds of up to 10Mbit/s may soon represent the entry-level tier of broadband offered by Telkom as it moves to fend off the threat posed by mobile broadband alternatives.

Telkom on Thursday announced that it was adjusting the packages of a number of its Telkom Internet broadband plans, including doubling speeds for users of its data-only 1Mbit/s (moving to 2Mbit/s) and 2Mbit/s (moving to 4Mbit/s) uncapped subscribers while leaving prices unchanged.

The upgrades will begin in November and be completed by early 2014, Telkom said.

Telkom Internet is cutting the price of its high-end home uncapped offerings, with 10Mbit/s data-only home uncapped dropping by R125 to R574/month. The top-end 40Mbit/s data-only uncapped product price is being reduced by R585 to R2 309/month.

Telkom is, however, increasing the price of its entry-level premium uncapped offerings – these products offer higher priority at all times of the day. The cost of its uncapped premium 1Mbit/s data-only product will rise by R130 to R489/month, along with a doubling in line speed to 2Mbit/s. A 4Mbit/s product (2Mbit/s before) will cost R969/month, from R639.

Bundle pricing, which includes broadband line rental, is coming down in most cases. More details, for both business and home users, are available in the Telkom-supplied tables below this article.

“Effectively, we are doubling the entry-level DSL speeds in the market,” said Telkom consumer services and retail MD Manelisa Mavuso. Where prices are being increased, these are by “far less than the actual value that customers are getting”, he claimed.  — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
