Former Google SA country manager Stephen Newton has been hired by Naspers to head up the JSE-listed media group’s e-commerce platforms.

As the CEO of the segment, Newton will responsible for platforms such as Careers24, Price Check and the newly launched Kalahari Ads.

“I have been appointed to bridge the gap between buyers and products online,” he says.

Newton, a US national, was most recently at mobile advertising business InMobi, which he joined after resigning as Google SA country manager a year ago.

Before joining Google, Newton worked at DoubleClick, which was acquired by Google soon after he joined the company. The acquisition saw Newton move to the search giant as Europe, Middle East and Africa head of Google Analytics, the Web traffic measurement tool.

Though Newton won’t reveal too many details about his plans for the e-commerce segment at Naspers, he says one of his first orders of business is to launch a new platform. “SA’s e-commerce is an exciting new market,” he says.  — Staff reporter, TechCentral
