The ANC has won an award for creating the largest political app on social networking site Mxit, the party said on Monday.
“To date, the ANC mobile application has received 717 000 downloads and has 430 000 active users,” spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.
“This development is encouraging and we will continue increasing our reach and accessibility to ensure that we promote democracy and transparency of our government to empower our people.”
Kodwa could not immediately be reached for further comment, and it was unclear when the party received the award.
Mxit advisory board member Eldrid Jordaan commended the ANC.
“The ANC has truly changed the game around election campaigning by engaging and addressing challenges raised by young people through the Mxit platform,” he said.
The award was accepted by African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe.
“We are delighted to be associated with Mxit, which is a proudly South African innovation. We are confident that our users on Mxit will grow and reach one million users by the end of the year,” Mantashe said. — Sapa
