Bradwin Roper, CEO of fintech at MTN South Africa, is leaving to “explore a new opportunity”. He’d only been in the role since last May.

“Since joining MTN SA in May 2023, Roper has played a key role in the growth of MTN’s fintech division. Under his leadership, MTN has witnessed as period of solid innovation and expansion, cementing his position as a leader in the sector,” MTN South Africa said in a statement on Tuesday announcing his departure.

Under Roper’s leadership, MTN relaunched its mobile money platform, MoMo, adding a raft of new features including insurance, international remittances, PayShap integration and a new point-of-sale device.

MTN did not say which company Roper is going to or what position he will be taking there

“MoMo South Africa is in a rebirth. This is our third go at it. Previously, anyone who has tried to show up in the mobile money space has found it difficult because the banks here are sophisticated. But we are now embarking on a sophisticated play with MoMo,” Roper told TechCentral in July, two months after taking on the role.

In its quarterly update for the period ending 31 March released on Tuesday, MTN said that its fintech business in South Africa continued to show good progress with total revenue up by 57.9% (including XtraTime, MTN’s airtime advance product).

MTN did not say which company Roper is going to or what position he will be taking there. Roper, who will leave MTN in October, could not be reached for comment. He previously worked for FNB for more than 10 years, and was head of FNB Connect, the bank’s mobile virtual network operator, before he joined MTN.  – © 2024 NewsCentral Media
