Unforeseen technical “challenges” forced the shutdown of the Gauteng department of education’s online application website, hours after it went live on Monday.
“The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has taken a decision to temporarily suspend the admissions online application website until Wednesday, 13 April 2016 due to unforeseen technical challenges,” it said in a statement.
The applications were for pupils for the 2017 school year. The admission period would end on 7 September.
“The system seems to have crashed after experiencing over 600 applicants per second. The department is currently attending to these technical challenges to ensure that the website is up and running by Wednesday.”
The department appealed for patience while it worked to fix the glitch. It apologised for any inconvenience caused.
