Naspers has sold African online price comparison service PriceCheck to Silvertree Internet Holdings and the company’s original founder, Kevin Tucker.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed.

Tucker started PriceCheck in 2006, focused then on the South African market, and sold it to Naspers in 2010. In 2013, it expanded into Nigeria. Today, the site compares the prices of 5m products from retailers such as Zando, Konga and Jumia.

PriceCheck CEO Andre de Wet will step down after five years in the role.

The platform has 25m unique annual visitors across its two platforms, and has recorded year-on-year growth of 40% in South Africa and 600% in Nigeria.

“Naspers, through investment and strategic partnerships, has built PriceCheck to be a leading price and product comparison platform,” said Tucker in a statement.

“My challenge now is to consolidate the considerable headway they have made over the last five years and build an infrastructure to service the many millions more Africans that will be venturing online for consumer goods, predominantly via mobile, in the coming years.”

Tucker is partnering with Silvertree through its subsidiary, ClicknCompare, which sources services and advice related to insurance, mobile, broadband and banking.  — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
