Samsung Electronics is targeting gamers and professionals with two new tablets, seeking to regain ground in mobile devices after pulling its Galaxy Note7 smartphone off shelves last year.
The Galaxy Tab S3, meant for entertainment, has a 9,7-inch Amoled screen, quad-stereo speakers and lets users play 4K video, Samsung said on Sunday ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
The Galaxy Book, aimed at professionals, comes in 10,6-inch and 12-inch models and runs the Windows 10 operating system. Samsung also showed a new virtual-reality viewer.
The world’s largest phone maker’s reputation took a hit after a series of reports about Note7 smartphones bursting into flame, leading to Samsung ultimately killing off the entire line.
That debacle cost the Suwon-based company an estimated US$6bn and dealt a severe blow to the company just as the competitive holiday season was getting under way.
“At Samsung, we are committed to expanding the boundaries of the mobile and computing experience by providing best-in-class products,” DJ Koh, head of Samsung’s mobile communications business, said in a statement. “Our new tablet portfolio is built with premium technology that delivers a productive and versatile experience to consumers, designed for users at home, work or on the go.”
Investors are also expecting Samsung to update its flagship Galaxy S line of phones. The company will create an all-screen front for the Galaxy S8 smartphones coming out this year and scrap the physical home button, people with direct knowledge of the matter said in December. — (c) 2017 Bloomberg LP
