JSE-listed technology group Altech saw its profit fall for the six months ended 31 August 2010. Releasing its interim results on Tuesday, the company reported a decrease in headline earnings per share to 206c from 292c a year earlier.

JSE-listed Allied Technologies (Altech) has threatened to take government to court if it decides to implement a Brazilian digital television standard instead of the European DVB-T standard. The company, which manufactures television decoders through its Altech UEC subsidiary, claims that local broadcasters and manufacturers have already invested R700m in preparing for digital migration on the assumption that SA would adopt the DVB-T standard.

JSE-listed technology group Altech is putting its muscle behind its Internet business, Technology Concepts, with plans to turn it into a tier-one service provider. Altech bought Technology Concepts last April, before it signed a deal with undersea cable Seacom. The move led many in industry to believe Altech would become a champion of local Internet provision.

There’s finally some good news for people tired of sitting in endless traffic jams. Altech has concluded a deal with the SABC that will allow Garmin and other manufacturers of GPS-based personal navigation devices (PNDs) to begin providing real-time traffic data to SA subscribers for the first time.
