    Telkom uncaps games, movies

Telkom’s retail Internet service provider, Telkom Internet, has launched two new uncapped promotions, Do Gaming and Do Movies, that offer users uncapped capacity to selected services, whether or not their existing subscription is uncapped.

The promotions run until the end of March 2014 and Telkom SA’s managing executive for consumer marketing, Erna Korff, says that thereafter Telkom will create commercial products based on the same format.

“We’ve seen an increased need for data in recent years and we don’t expect that to change,” Korff says. “We’re looking to make it easier and more affordable for customers to use huge amounts of data.”

She says smart TV’s and forthcoming gaming consoles mean the “need for data is going to increase even more” and, consequently, Telkom is “going to have to be more innovative”.

Last month, Telkom Wholesale announced that it was doubling all broadband line speeds at no additional cost to third-party resellers and consumers. https://techcentral.co.za/telkom-to-double-adsl-speeds/43810/

Korff explains that the Do Movies promotion will give all Telkom Internet customers with 5GB subscriptions or higher uncapped access to “major movie platforms”, including DStv Catch Up  and BoxOffice online, Apple TV (via iTunes) and the Samsung Video Hub. The promotion does not apply to YouTube or to international video-streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Existing Telkom Internet customers don’t need to do anything to benefit from the Do Movies promotion.

The Do Gaming add-on offers uncapped data to major gaming platforms and servers, including Telkom’s own Do Gaming servers, the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Battle.net, Steam and Origin. Do Gaming will cost R49/month, but Telkom is offering a 30-day free trial for the month of October. From November, users can pay by credit card or can subscribe to the service until March and have the monthly fee added to their monthly Telkom account.  — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
