Cape Town-based SmartMobile, which forms part of the Digicall Group, has launched a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) piggybacking on Cell C’s network to provide services.
The new MVNO has been put together by MVN-X, the MVNO “enablement company” headed by former Virgin Mobile South Africa CEO Steve Bailey. MVN-X has launched a number of MVNOs in recent months, including MRP Mobile and me&you mobile.
The call rate on the new SmartMobile MVNO plan is 99c/ minute to any network at any time of the day.
There are various bundled options offering both mobile handsets and tablets, the company said. Consumers are able to top up their airtime, just like any other prepaid offering.
SmartMobile is a part of iSmart, which in turn is a part of the Digicall Group. iSmart also consists of SmartCover, an insurance and value-added services business; SmartData, which provides consumer data; and Smart Communication, which offers voice-over-Internet protocol and other telecommunications solutions to small and medium enterprises.
SmartMobile, which is headed by CEO Andre Geboers, has been operational in the mobile environment for more 10 years and has activated about 600 000 clients, it said.
Although initially all business will be channelled through outbound call centres, there is potential for a retail presence at a later stage, Geboers said in a statement. – © 2015 NewsCentral Media
