Former regional director for BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) has been appointed as the new MD of Samsung Electronics in SA, the Korean company said on Monday.
TechCentral revealed last month that Liebenberg, who had headed RIM’s operations in sub-Saharan Africa for nearly five years, was headed to Samsung, but it was not clear at the time what role he would be assuming at the company.
Liebenberg and his team at RIM are credited with helping drive the strong growth of BlackBerry smartphones, especially in the consumer market, in SA. During his tenure at RIM, Liebenberg grew BlackBerry’s presence in the SA market in leaps and bounds, helping transform the brand from being popular only among corporate office workers to being wildly successful in the retail consumer and youth markets.
BlackBerry recently ousted Coca-Cola as the “coolest overall brand” among 8-22-year-olds in the Sunday Times Generation Next Youth Brand Survey.
Samsung said last month that Liebenberg would take on a “senior executive role” but that details still had to be finalised. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
