Eskom on Monday released a smartphone application called MyEskom. Among other things, the app, which runs on Android and iOS, provides information on the current and forecast condition of the national power system.
The app also provides energy-saving and weather information, plus data on power outages. There’s a mobile site at myeskom.co.za for those who can load the apps, Eskom said in a statement.
“The app provides the latest information on the forecasted status of the national power system and allows users to contact Eskom through a ‘talk to Eskom’ function,” the electricity supplier said.
“We built the app to give electricity customers and users better and more direct access to information that applies to their own consumption profile,” said Eskom chief information officer Sal Laher. “Ultimately, it should help users consume electricity more efficiently, and improve communication and services.”
The app allows users to build a personalised profile based on the types of appliances they have in their home. It also makes available the forecasted national power status and links to schedules for load shedding. Users will also receive notifications, should they choose to, for announcements, Eskom said.
The company plans to enhance the app to include meter readings being entered; buying prepaid electricity directly; and regular updates about the status of the system. — © 2014 NewsCentral Media
