Telkom is expanding its “uncapped” 4G/LTE broadband offering to 200 additional sites in Gauteng, the company said on Friday.
“Telkom today announced that it will be rolling out the second phase of SmartBroadband Uncapped High Speed Wireless packages to more than 200 additional areas in Gauteng. The online sale will take place on 7 September to offer the uncapped packages to customers on a 24-month contract at prices starting at R599,” the operator said in a statement.
Telkom decided to expand the uncapped offering based on the “success” — its word — of the first phase of the project, in which 400 people took up the packages in 29 locations in Gauteng.
“Phase two of the sale will also allow customers to purchase the packages via Telkom stores or its direct sales force,” it said.
The plan is eventually to offer the service countrywide, said Telkom mobile and consumer MD Attila Vitai.
Customers signing up for the deal will receive an antenna and installation by Telkom technicians at no additional cost, it added.
“The second phase of the online sale will be focused on selected base stations in Gauteng from 7 September to 30 November and will be rolled out to additional locations in the Western Cape and Durban in the following months. Eligible locations in Western Cape and Durban will be announced towards the end of the year.”
A Web page will go live on 7 September with details of the plans, Telkom said. As before, 150 spots will be available per base station. The introductory offer will start at R599 for the first 50 customers, R699 for the second 50 and R799 for the final 50 available packages at each base station.
“Customers who participate in the online sale or purchase the packages at Telkom stores or via Telkom’s direct sales force after the 150 spots have already been taken will be added to a waiting list. Existing Telkom customers in the select areas will have the opportunity to transition to the new packages depending on availability at each base station,” the company said.
A fair-use policy applies to the plans. Importantly, the service will offer uncapped data for all traffic types except bandwidth-intensive protocols or applications, which will be capped at 50GB/month. These protocols will operate at full speed between 12am and 6am daily if users are within the 50GB cap.
“Once a subscriber reaches the 50GB cap, the bandwidth-intensive protocols or applications shall be throttled to 128kbit/s speed for the rest of the month. Full speeds shall resume at the beginning of the next calendar month.”
