Seacom has upgraded its submarine cable system that connects South Africa and East Africa to Europe. The upgrade has added 500Gbit/s of capacity, taking the total capacity on the route to 1.5Tbit/s.
The cable was last upgraded 18 months ago, when capacity was increased from 500Gbit/s to 1Tbit/s.
“The upgrade increases available capacity in Seacom’s key markets of Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The solution will allow Seacom to deliver requirements for high-capacity connectivity in very short timeframes and provide for future demands,” it said.
The latest deployment is based on 100Gbit/s “coherent dense wave-division multiplexing” technology, and will provide room for Seacom to add more capacity as required — and to do so quickly.
