Former Seacom chief commercial officer Willem Marais has joined fast-growing pan-Africa telecommunications company Liquid Telecom as group managing executive and CEO of its South African operation.

Marais will be responsible for Liquid Telecom’s global wholesale data business in addition to heading up business operations in South Africa, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Willem has a great track record of developing long-term customer partnerships and leading negotiations with large scale wholesale telecommunication infrastructure transactions in Europe, Middle East and Africa, which makes him perfect for this important position within our company,” said Liquid Telecom CEO Nic Rudnick in the same statement.

Liquid, which has a growing presence across Africa, provides fibre-optic, satellite and international carrier services to network operators, Internet service providers and other businesses.

It operates 18 000km of fibre-optic network infrastructure, running from the north of Uganda to Cape Town. It connects to Africa’s five man subsea cable systems, namely Wacs, Eassy, Seacom, Sat-3 and Teams. The company operates in South Africa, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the UK.  — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
