Smarter operations take centre stage at Electra Mining Africa 2026

Industrial businesses are operating under sustained pressure. Rising operating costs, energy constraints, ageing infrastructure, supply chain uncertainty and skills shortages are forcing organisations to rethink how they run. At the same time, advances in AI, the industrial internet of things (IIoT), robotics, automation and digital manufacturing are opening new ways to work.

For most organisations, the difficulty is no longer finding technology. It is knowing which technologies will deliver business value.

The businesses that lead the next decade are unlikely to be those that invest in the most technology. They will be the ones that connect it well: linking data, systems, equipment and people so that each investment supports the others, rather than deploying isolated solutions that never talk to each other.

The question has shifted from what to buy to how to build a smarter operation.

    Start with visibility

Industrial businesses have generated enormous volumes of operational data for years, much of it trapped in disconnected systems. Connected sensors, industrial software platforms and IIoT technologies are bringing that information together, letting organisations monitor equipment, production processes and assets in real time. Better visibility means inefficiencies surface earlier and decisions get made faster.

Reducing unplanned downtime follows from it. Unexpected equipment failures hit production schedules, maintenance costs and customer commitments. Predictive maintenance moves organisations beyond fixed servicing intervals, using connected sensors, machine learning and continuous condition monitoring to flag problems before they become failures. Maintenance teams intervene earlier, which improves reliability while cutting unnecessary work.

Technology is not replacing skilled people. It is giving them better information and earlier warnings

Safety is changing in the same direction. Automation, robotics, machine vision and smart monitoring reduce how often employees are exposed to hazardous environments while improving consistency and control. The technology is not replacing skilled people. It is giving them better information and earlier warnings.

AI extends all of this. Rather than displacing human expertise, it helps engineers, plant managers and operational teams work through large volumes of operational data, identify patterns and decide faster. Its greatest value in industrial environments lies less in automation than in enabling better operational choices.

Connections matter more than the components

Digital manufacturing, automation, AI, IIoT and predictive maintenance deliver their greatest value as part of an integrated operational strategy. Technology investments work when they align with business objectives, existing infrastructure and the practical realities of day-to-day operations. Competitive advantage comes from connecting the right technologies to solve real problems, not from owning more of them.

Which is why the conversations matter as much as the innovation. Understanding how smart operations are built means comparing technologies, questioning suppliers, discussing implementation problems with technical experts and seeing the equipment work. Whether it is AI-enabled software, industrial automation, robotics, connected sensors or predictive maintenance, speaking directly to the engineers behind a product gives a level of insight that reports and webinars do not.

    Electra Mining Africa 2026

Industry events bring together the people building these technologies and the organisations looking to apply them, creating opportunities to exchange ideas, compare solutions and work out how different technologies fit together. Electra Mining Africa runs from 7 to 11 September 2026 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, gathering technology suppliers, engineering specialists and industrial decision-makers in one place. The 2024 edition drew close to 40 000 visitors.

Industry professionals can register to attend free of charge.
