Sacked communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda has a new job. President Jacob Zuma has asked the speaker of the national assembly, Max Sisulu, to appoint Nyanda as the “president’s parliamentary counsellor” with immediate effect.
“Nyanda will be the president’s personal representative in parliament, keeping him abreast about developments and providing advice on the course of action required on issues,” Zuma’s office said on a statement on Thursday.
“The president ceased to be a member of the national assembly soon after election as president, in terms of the constitution of the republic,” the statement said.
Nyanda will manage Zuma’s liaison with presiding officers and structures in parliament, as well as relations with leaders of political parties.
In the statement, Nyanda said he is “encouraged by the president’s determination to promote good working relations with political parties represented in parliament”.
It’s understood that Zuma had previously offered Nyanda a diplomatic posting in Germany, a position he apparently turned down. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
