A fire broke out at Mxit’s offices in Stellenbosch early this morning.
The fire started at 2am on Wednesday.
Mxit chief financial officer Richard Newton said the fire was the result of an electrical fault.
“There was a fair amount of smoke damage that is limited to a small area on one floor.”
Newton says that up to 10 staff would have to be relocated while the damage caused by the fire was repaired.
“We are unable to estimate the value of the damage at this stage,” he said.
The fire was not expected to impact on the company’s operations. “It’s business as usual, “ Newton said.
News of the fire comes just weeks after a fire menaced two of the country’s biggest data centre operators.
On 5 March, Teraco and Hetzner reported that the building that housed their Cape Town data centres had caught alight. That fire was later contained. — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
