Vodacom SA MD and group chief operating officer Sipho Maseko is leaving the mobile operator to “pursue other interests” after only nine months in the role.
It is unclear who will replace Maseko, where he is going, or what prompted his sudden departure.
Maseko, who joined the company in September 2011, will also relinquish all of his directorships of the group’s companies with immediate effect.
Prior to joining Vodacom, Maseko was an executive at BP and had no previous telecommunications experience.
He joined BP in 1997 and held various positions during his time with the company, including those of chief operating officer and deputy CEO.
Vodacom chief officer for corporate affairs Maya Makanjee says after Maseko tended his resignation, the group’s board tried to encourage him to stay on but that he had elected to leave the group.
Makanjee says a further announcement will be made in due course and that the company cannot yet speak about vacant positions. — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media
