European antitrust regulators are set to open a formal investigation into Google’s digital advertising practices, people familiar with the matter said, with the move likely to come before the end of the year.
A European Commission probe could pose the biggest threat to Google, which made US$147-billion in revenue from online ads last year, more than any other company in the world.
Ads on its own properties, including search, YouTube and Gmail, accounted for the bulk of sales and profits.
