Cell C has launched a 4G/LTE network and announced aggressive price plans, including a deal that offers 100GB of data for R100, valid for 90 days.
CEO Jose Dos Santos said on Wednesday that Cell C has spent R2bn this year deploying the LTE network, which includes the radio access network and the fibre infrastructure to connect its base stations.
The operator is focusing on major urban areas in its roll-out, with the LTE network already available in Gauteng as well as in parts of Durban. It will have 200 live LTE sites in Cape Town by December. It expects to have 4 000 base stations live on LTE by early 2017.
Cell C is deploying its LTE network using 10MHz of spectrum in the 2,1GHz band.
Dos Santos said 400 000 Cell C customers have already been “provisioned” for LTE. He said customers should expect average download speeds of at least 30Mbit/s.
The 100GB for R100 LTE deal will be launched on 1 October, Dos Santos said.
However, there is a catch. The deal is only available to the first thousand customers in Gauteng who sign up at Cell C’s head office in Woodmead, Johannesburg, and to 500 customers in KwaZulu-Natal, who visit the company’s regional offices in Umhlanga, Durban.
The deal is available on a first-come first-serve basis on 1 October and is limited to one Sim per user.
Dos Santos said the company is launching a number of new broadband products at aggressive prices aimed at consumers as well as home office users. — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
