Cell C will expand its 4G/LTE network to the Western Cape, the mobile operator said on Wednesday. Commercial switch-on will happen on 1 December.

The launch of the LTE network is timed to meet demand from holidaymakers, who are expected to stream into the province in the coming weeks.

“The first phase of 280 sites across the Western Cape is now complete and ready for customers to enjoy,” Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos said in a statement.

The first thousand customers to visit the Cell C Walk in Customer Care Centre in Tygervalley on 1 December will be able to purchase 100GB of data, valid for 3 months, for R100. A similar offer was provided when Cell C launched LTE in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Cell C said it has spent R2bn on its LTE network in 2015 and will invest a further R6bn in the next two years to roll out the technology in other provinces and extend coverage to other parts of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

It has also set aside capital to invest in an additional 1 600 fibre links in the new financial year, it said.
