Cell C has partnered with Facebook to roll out public-access Wi-Fi hotspots in South Africa, and has taken the first few live at the University of the Western Cape.
Using Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi platform, Cell C said the UWC roll-out marks Cell C’s first step in rolling out hotspots across the country.
“Connecting more people across our country, especially those that are not yet connected, is at the heart of this project,” said Cell C interim CEO Douglas Craigie Stevenson in a statement.
More areas will be announced once the City of Cape Town has approved additional roll-out zones. The city signed a memorandum of understanding with Cell C in 2018 for the Wi-Fi roll-out plan.
“Having this free service accessible to tertiary students can help their learning journey and that’s why we’ve signed a memorandum of understanding last year with Cell C and look forward to expanding this feature as they plan to roll out a similar service at sites across Cape Town,” said mayor Dan Plato in the statement. — © 2019 NewsCentral Media
