Telecommunications operators have expressed concern that the regulations governing certain aspects of the Consumer Protection Act, due to be implemented in April, have not yet been finalised.
Without the finalised regulations, some aspects of the legislation will be difficult to implement. The regulations have undergone a public comment phase and are in the process of being finalised.
However, Sipho Tleane director of legal support at the consumer and corporate regulation division at trade & industry says the department is aware that although companies have had a long time to implement the stipulations of the act, they will not have much time to make necessary changes once the regulations are finalised.
“The minister [Rob Davies] is aware that there will be time constraints in implementing the regulations and is dealing with the matter,” he says.
He says the department is exploring every possible avenue to resolve the matter and Davies will announce his decision through the media soon. — Candice Jones, TechCentral
