Do not replace public protector Thuli Madonsela with a lapdog, the Democratic Alliance has said.
“Adv Madonsela, a fearless and non-partisan defender of the people of South Africa, has set the bar high in terms of what is expected of the woman or man who occupies the office of the public protector,” DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach said on Sunday.
The party called for qualified and courageous individuals to apply or to nominate candidates for the post, following parliament’s official publishing of the advertisement.
Breytenbach said the chapter 9 institution had played a pivotal role, in the last seven years, in shedding light on corrupt activities of state officials and politicians.
She said replacing Madonsela with a “lapdog would be contrary to the spirit and role of the public protector envisaged by the constitution and the doctrine of the separation of powers”.
Nominations can be submitted until 24 June, the ad hoc committee tasked with finding a new public protector said on Sunday.
Madonsela’s term ends in October, and parliament has tasked the ad hoc committee with nominating a replacement by 31 August.
