MTN Mobile Money users will soon be able to make face-to-face and online transactions wherever Visa is accepted, MTN said on Wednesday.
As part of the agreement, MTN customers’ devices will be able to pay using their MTN Mobile Money accounts in stores with Visa-branded points of sale, the operator said. Customers will be able to make online payments at all Visa merchants and withdraw money from their MTN Mobile Money accounts at any Visa-branded ATM.
“The partnership between MTN and Visa will provide MTN Mobile Money customers with access to the entire Visa network, which includes merchants, online vendors and ATMs,” said MTN group chief commercial officer Pieter Verkade.
Ghana will be the first country where the new system will be implemented. This will happen before the end of 2013, MTN said. It will then be rolled out progressively across the markets in Africa and the Middle East in which MTN operates.
MTN Mobile Money allows users to do national and international money transfers, make utility and other service payments, purchase airtime, access insurance and financial products and make retail payments. At the end of September, the service had 13,4m registered users and was available in 13 countries. — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
