Neotel’s chief financial officer, Steven Whiley, has resigned. Whiley was suspended from the telecommunications operator in July, along with CEO Sunil Joshi, over allegations of bribery related to a multibillion-rand contract at Transnet.
In a tersely worded statement on Friday, Neotel said Whiley had complied with a board-initiated process “while an investigation was being conducted into certain transactions involving Neotel and Homix”.
Joshi and Whiley were placed on “special leave” at the end of July following publication of a report in the Mail & Guardian that said Neotel may have made dodgy payments to a company called Homix in order to secure a telecommunications contract worth R1,8bn from state-owned Transnet.
Neotel, which is currently the subject of a R7bn takeover bid by Vodacom, said Whiley complied fully with the board-led investigation and it expressed its thanks for this.
“With the information currently at its disposal, the board is satisfied that Steven Whiley has at all times acted with integrity,” it said. “As a result of the lengthy duration of the investigation, Whiley has decided to pursue his own interests, and will resign from Neotel with effect from 30 November 2015.”
The statement did not say anything about Joshi. — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
